Artist Statement

Art jewelry is synonymous with hand-made, one-of-a-kind, exquisite in quality, and thoughtful intention.  Since it takes long time to obtain mastery and skill in manipulating metal, many jewelers are relying heavily on machines and factories to replace human hands. My work focuses on craftsmanship. It is not that the more complicated the craftsmanship can create handmade jewelry works. Handmade jewelry is made by artists, not machinery. My work is to support real people and involves as little mechanical production as possible. Cutting is the most basic hand-production method, but there can be many changes in the production process. People can see the value of time in my work and the process that the designer focuses on.

Born and raised in Tianjin, China, Jiaxiu Chai (Amber) is a jeweler and a designer currently residing in Savannah, GA. She received a B.A. in gemology and materials technology form TianJin University of Commerce and is currently an M.F.A. candidate in jewelry at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Her early education provided knowledge of gem appraisal and jewelry identification, as well as jewelry design. With a strong affinity for design and studio work she shifted her focus to the process of making. Informed by daily life, her favorite place to do research is not her room but her courtyard, which opens to the garden.
